Music As Love Language

Music As Love Language

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly with all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing in your hearts to the Lord." – Colossians 3:16

The word of God encourages us, as human beings created in His image, to make music! “Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord.”

Music as A Divine Gift

Music is a divine gift that speaks to the deepest parts of our souls. It’s a means of expressing love to God, connecting with others, and experiencing the joy of His presence.

Reflecting on this truth in the middle of my new music project, I had a revelation: maybe music is my love language

In his book The Five Love Languages, Gary Chapman explains how people express and receive love through words, touch, gifts, acts of service, and quality time. Music, however, is not included as one of those five love languages.

But consider that music might have a special relationship with God because woven throughout Scripture, it is a way of glorifying God. Psalm 100:2 calls us to "Come before him with joyful songs," while Psalm 98:1 exhorts us to "Sing to the Lord a new song." Enjoying the gift of music and singing is a powerful way to express our love and gratitude to God.

The Joy of Creating Something Meaningful

This week, I’ve been experiencing the joy of creating music while working in the studio on my new project. There’s nothing else like it - crafting the song production, collaborating with other musicians, and creating something beautiful. It’s complex and challenging, yet ultimately fulfilling. When it all comes together, it feels magical.

It reminds me that music, as a love language, is a way to offer something meaningful to God and to others.

Caution against Transactionalism

Yet, as someone who’s been in the music business for years, I’ve also seen the danger of reducing music to something transactional. When music becomes about applause, paychecks, or consumption, we lose sight of its most beautiful purpose. But when we approach music as a gift to God—an act of worship and love—we reclaim its sacred purpose. Instead of seeking recognition, we seek connection with the Creator.

Music, as a love language, is about giving, connecting, and offering ourselves to God. It’s about pursuing what is good, beautiful, and truthful. Let’s reclaim that purpose.

And that is today’s Divine Perspective!

PRAYER:

Father, we thank You for the gift of music and the way it connects us to You. We repent for the times we’ve turned music into something transactional or failed to appreciate its sacred purpose. Renew our hearts and teach us to use music as an offering of love—to You and to others. May we sing for joy to God our strength. Amen.
